What to expect from your Driving Instructor Training Programme

Part 1 Theory Test Training

We provide you with all your required learning equipment, such as complimentary online training resources and study materials, alongside essential study materials. You’ll receive great support along the way as we are committed to empowering you to succeed.

If you are a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) choosing to do your training intensively we can offer you 100% of our efforts to get you passed as quickly as possible. If you are, like many others, choosing to do your driving instructor training part time whilst juggling other commitments, you can rest assured we can flex to your needs. Whether it's online and virtual support, in person at the office, or in car to bolster your hazard perception, we will do all we can to get you over your first hurdle. You'll then only have one more exam before you can potentially start earning on PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) Trainee Licence.

Part 2 Practical Driving Test Training

Our overall aim for Part 2 Training is focused on improving your driving ability, and honing your skills and techniques. This will include “Show me, Tell me” questions to test your knowledge of basic car maintenance to help you prepare for the exam, practising test routes, and most importantly - polishing away any 'bad habits' you may have picked up since you passed your own test. You'll get hints and tips from those who are already established in the industry throughout the remainder of your training alongside the high quality formal training that will be recorded on your training logs.

Part 3 Delivering Lessons Training

You will receive around 40 hours of training, with up to 30 hours of one to one in car training with an instructor who is expertly trained in teaching other Instructors. They will develop your instructional ability and coach you on how to teach pupils to drive safely through a mix of online and in-car sessions. This element of your training includes:

Lesson Planning
Risk Management
Teaching and Learning Strategies

To help you with this stage of training, we also offer you a complimentary downloadable Lesson Plan and Diagram book which you are welcome to use when teaching learners. Last but definitely not least - we will also arrange Safeguarding Training to empower you with confidence in your new role.

At this point - if you want, you can go for the Part 3 test, but since practise makes perfect, most of our trainees start earning straight away by opting to go on a PDI Trainee Licence:

PDI Trainee Licence

Most trainees select this hugely beneficial road to success! You can apply for a trainee licence once you’ve passed your Part 2 exam and done the relevant training from the DVSA, which we’ll sponsor you on for 6 months. This means you can start providing driving lessons while earning money every week as a potential driving instructor (PDI) with ecoPASS driving school. You’ll get the vital experience you’ll need to give you the best possible chances of success with passing your Part 3 Exam.

Once you have done this, you’ll be added to DVSA’s register as an approved driving instructor (ADI). You can then breathe easy and really make the most of the rewarding and fulfilling career that you have stepped into.
